What is a medium-haul flight?
We're used to talking about short-haul and long-haul flights, but did you know that there are also medium-haul flights? So what are they? When do we travel on a medium-haul flight? I'll tell you all about it!
What is a medium-haul flight?
A medium-haul flight is a commercial air journey covering a moderate distance, generally between 1,500 and 4,000 kilometres. These flights typically connect neighbouring regions or countries, and involve flight times ranging from a few hours to around 6 hours maximum. Medium-haul flights can carry between 120 and 230 passengers. Most medium-haul flights fly at altitudes of between 9,000 and 12,000 metres (30,000 and 40,000 feet). This altitude can vary depending on a number of factors, including the distance of the flight, weather conditions and air traffic. In general, aircraft operating medium-haul flights seek to reach altitudes where they can benefit from optimum fuel efficiency and avoid potential obstacles.
Differences from other flights
We often hear about short-haul and long-haul flights, but much less about medium-haul flights. Yet these are probably the flights that you, the French, take most often when you travel in Europe. So what are the differences between medium-haul, short-haul and long-haul flights? These three categories of flight are distinguished mainly by the distance they cover and the associated flight time. This leads to differences in the types of aircraft used, on-board services and operational characteristics, which I share with you below:
1) Distance and flight time
- A short-haul flight covers short distances, generally less than 1500km, with flight times of less than 4 hours.
- A medium-haul flight covers moderate distances, from 1,500 to 4,000km, with flight times of 4 to 6 hours.
- A long-haul flight covers long distances, often exceeding 4,000km, with flight times of up to 12 hours for intercontinental flights.
2) Types of aircraft
- Short-haul flights are often made with narrow-body aircraft designed for short distances, such as Airbus A320s or Boeing 737s.
- Medium-haul flights use the same types of aircraft as short-haul flights, although wide-body aircraft may be used for certain routes.
- Long-haul flights are operated by wide-body aircraft capable of covering long distances non-stop, such as the Airbus 1330, Boeing 777 or Boeing 787.
3) In-flight services
- Short-haul flights: in-flight services are often limited, with simple catering options and standard seats.
- Medium-haul: services can be more comprehensive, with meals or snacks offered depending on the airline, with a slightly enhanced flight experience.
- Long-haul flights: airlines generally offer a full range of in-flight services, including quality meals, in-flight entertainment and more spacious seats, even bed-seat options in business class.
Medium-haul destinations from France
They are many and varied, offering a wide range of options for travellers. Here are some of the most popular medium-haul destinations from France:
- Western Europe: European capitals and major cities such as London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Geneva are easily accessible from France.
- Central and Eastern Europe: destinations such as Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow, Vienna and Moscow are served by medium-haul flights from France.
- Mediterranean: Mediterranean islands such as Malta, Cyprus, the Greek islands and the Canaries are among the medium-haul destinations from France. Coastal cities such as Dubrovnik, Split, Athens and Istanbul are also accessible.
- North Africa: popular destinations such as Marrakech, Tunis, Algiers and Casablanca are easily accessible from France on medium-haul flights.
Which aircraft are used for medium-haul flights?
The aircraft used for medium-haul flights vary from airline to airline. Certain types of aircraft are commonly used because of their efficiency and ability to serve medium-haul routes. These aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 Family, Boeing 737, Airbus A220, Embraer E-Jet and Boeing 757, offer a combination of operational efficiency, passenger comfort and performance suited to medium-haul flights.
So now you know that the next time you hop on a plane to fly to Madrid from Paris, you'll be on a medium-haul flight! All I have to do now is wish you a pleasant journey!
